BPO meaning: Business Process Outsourcing. A company pays an outside provider to run part of its business, most often customer service, technical support, back office work, or accounting, instead of hiring and managing that team itself.
How BPO works day to day
The arrangement is simple: a client company, usually in the US, Australia, or Europe, signs a contract with a BPO provider to run a function on its behalf. The provider hires the people, trains them on the client's products and systems, runs the shifts, and answers to the client against agreed performance targets. The customer on the phone or chat usually never knows the person helping them works for a different company than the brand they contacted.
What gets outsourced falls into two broad buckets. Front office means work that touches the customer: support calls, chat, email, sales, collections. Back office means everything behind the scenes: data entry, claims processing, payroll, bookkeeping, content moderation. A single client can hand one function or a whole department to a provider, and large providers run hundreds of these arrangements, each with its own trained team, targets, and systems.
BPO in the Philippines
The Philippines is one of the world's largest BPO destinations, and the industry is a pillar of the national economy: per IBPAP, the industry association, it employs around 1.8 million people directly and earns roughly 8 percent of GDP. English fluency, a service-culture reputation, and government incentives built the industry from the early 2000s onward.
One insider detail that surprises newcomers: because most clients are American, much of the industry works the night shift to match US business hours, and the Labor Code's night shift differential (an extra 10 percent minimum for work between 10pm and 6am) is a standard part of a BPO paycheck.

03What is a BPO job?
A job at a provider company doing outsourced work for a client brand, most commonly customer service representative, technical support, or back office processing. Training is provided on the client's products, and in the Philippines many roles follow US business hours.
