In a BPO, an SME (subject matter expert) is a senior agent or specialist who holds deep, verified knowledge of one account, process, or product line, and whose job is to transfer that knowledge to the rest of the floor through coaching, real-time call support, and documentation. The role sits between agent and team leader on most org charts. It is not the same SME as in banking or economics, where the letters stand for small and medium enterprise; in a Philippine call center, when a recruiter says SME, they mean the person other agents turn to when a case goes beyond the script.

Indeed's career guide defines an SME more broadly as a professional known for extensive understanding of a particular technology, subject area, or process, someone able to apply that knowledge to practical problems. Time Doctor's BPO-specific guide narrows it usefully: an individual with a deep understanding of a key business aspect who is responsible for sharing that knowledge with other stakeholders.

What a subject matter expert actually does

PHP 295,000

per year at the 75th percentile

Across the sourced role guides and live Philippine job ads, SME responsibilities cluster into five areas:

  • Floor support. Taking escalations and supervisor calls, answering agent questions in real time, and handling the cases the knowledge base does not cover.
  • Coaching and nesting. Supporting new agents through their first weeks on calls, monitoring performance, and flagging training gaps to the training team.
  • Process ownership. Writing and updating procedures, job aids, and knowledge base articles, then getting management sign-off on changes.
  • Quality validation. Checking that deliverables and call handling follow client policy, compliance rules, and current process versions.
  • Feedback to the client. Surfacing recurring issues, process gaps, and improvement suggestions to operations leads and client stakeholders.

Philippine postings typically ask for at least one year of experience on the relevant account or industry, with prior SME, trainer, or quality experience listed as an advantage rather than a requirement.

SME salary in the Philippines: what the job platforms show

Salary data for the role is noisy because SME covers everything from a voice-account senior agent to a specialist in US mortgage servicing. The platform numbers, all retrieved on August 6, 2026, tell that story:

  • Indeed Philippines reports an average of PHP 34,315 per month from 57 reported salaries (updated July 25, 2026), with a spread from PHP 18,677 to PHP 63,048 depending on experience, location, and employer. Makati leads its city table at PHP 61,793 per month.
  • JobStreet Philippines, which builds its figures only from salary ranges employers disclose on job ads, shows Metro Manila location averages of PHP 70,000 to PHP 75,000 per month as of August 2026. That figure skews high: ads that disclose pay tend to be the specialist and technical SME roles, not floor-level SME posts.
  • Payscale puts the median for a product subject matter expert at PHP 195,000 per year from a small sample of nine profiles (updated June 17, 2026), roughly PHP 16,000 per month at the median but reaching PHP 295,000 per year at the 75th percentile.
  • At the single-company level, employee reports for Wipro BPO Philippines average PHP 17,324 per month across 12 reports, well below the national average, which shows how much the same title can pay differently between employers.

A fair reading of all four: a floor-level BPO SME in the Philippines commonly earns somewhere in the PHP 25,000 to 40,000 per month band, senior and technical SME roles in Makati and Taguig can reach PHP 60,000 or more, and titles alone tell you little. The pathway from agent to SME

SME is usually the first promotion available to a high-performing agent, and most companies fill it internally. The typical sequence looks like this:

  1. Agent, 12 months or more on one account. Consistent top-quartile quality and CSAT scores are the baseline. Most postings ask for at least a year of relevant experience.
  2. Informal go-to person. Before the title exists, the future SME is already the agent teammates ask. Team leads notice this.
  3. Selection and upskilling. Per Time Doctor's guide, organizations either hire experienced SMEs or train high-performing agents into the role, usually through aptitude screening and sponsored SME training.
  4. SME proper. Off the phones partially or fully, owning escalations, nesting support, and documentation.
  5. Branching. From SME, the common next steps are team leader (people track), quality analyst or trainer (specialist track), or process and product roles on the client side.

Skills and certifications

There is no national SME certificate in the Philippines; the credential that anchors the pathway below it is TESDA's Contact Center Services NC II, the government training regulation for contact center work. Its core competencies, communicating effectively in English for customer service, performing customer service delivery processes, and engaging customers effectively, define the agent-level baseline an SME is expected to have mastered and then teach. Above that, what employers screen for is demonstrated account knowledge, coaching ability, clear documentation, and comfort presenting to both agents and clients. Client-side or industry certifications (for example in healthcare, insurance, or financial services processes) strengthen a candidacy for specialist SME roles, which is where the pay premium in the JobStreet data comes from.

The role is also changing. As AI assistants absorb routine queries, the calls that reach humans are harder on average, which raises the value of people who hold the deep process knowledge, a shift we track in our industry news coverage. Agents preparing for an SME step can build the coaching and AI-tooling side of the skill set through our AI Academy.
