The Philippine BPO industry employs nearly 2 million workers and contributes over US$40 billion annually, more than 8 per cent of the country's GDP. In India, BPO services support close to 6 million workers and account for roughly 7 per cent of GDP. Together, the two nations dominate global outsourcing, with India holding an estimated 55 per cent of IT outsourcing and the Philippines capturing 15 to 18 per cent of the broader BPO market.
For workers like Paul Ponce, a call centre Philippines agent working the night shift to serve US clients, the industry has delivered real economic mobility. "I was able to send my four kids to a private school," he said. "Now we can afford to buy our own house." In Bengaluru, India's back-office capital, similar stories play out daily as workers log on at 8pm to keep operations running while American businesses sleep.
