Artificial intelligence poses a real but containable challenge to the Philippine business process outsourcing sector, according to industry experts and the country's own AI advocacy groups. The concern is not a sudden collapse of the industry, but a quieter shift: automation handling routine work while fewer entry-level roles are created, even as revenues continue to grow.
Dominic Vincent Ligot, Director for AI Ethics and Data Governance at the Philippine AI Business Association, put it plainly: "The immediate danger is not the disappearance of the sector, but the automation of routine tasks, fewer entry-level positions, and growth in revenues without comparable growth in employment." He added that the outcome depends heavily on how fast the industry responds.
