Its transcription page states that the firm holds ISO 27001, PCI-DSS and HIPAA certifications and delivers from the Philippines inside the client's EHR or EMR. Absence from this list is not a judgment on any provider. Two compliance checks that are not optional

A business associate agreement with the required clauses

A transcription vendor that handles protected health information for a US covered entity is a business associate under HIPAA, and 45 CFR 164.504(e) sets out what the contract must contain. The regulation requires the agreement to establish the permitted and required uses and disclosures of protected health information, to oblige the vendor to use appropriate safeguards for electronic records, to report any use or disclosure not provided for in the contract, to bind subcontractors to the same restrictions, and to return or destroy all protected health information when the contract ends. A Philippine provider that hesitates over any of these clauses, or that cannot explain how its subcontractor chain is covered, has failed the first test before pricing even comes up.

ISO 27001 status you can trace to a certificate

ISO/IEC 27001 is the international standard that formally specifies an information security management system, mandating requirements for how an organisation implements, monitors, maintains and continually improves its security controls, as summarised in Microsoft's compliance documentation. Certification is issued by an accredited third-party body and audited on a recurring cycle, which is exactly why a logo on a website is not evidence. Ask for the certificate number, the certifying body and the scope statement, then confirm that the certified scope actually covers the facility and the service line that will touch your records.

AI moved the work from typing to editing

The clearest measure of how speech recognition changed this trade comes from the US labour data that Philippine vendors ultimately depend on. According to O*NET, which carries US Bureau of Labor Statistics projections, the United States employed 43,900 medical transcriptionists in 2024, with employment projected to decline by 1 percent or more between 2024 and 2034 and a median wage of 40,410 US dollars in 2025. The volume of raw dictation typing is shrinking because software now produces the first draft.

What has not shrunk is the need for a trained human to fix that draft. An industry analysis from transcription vendor TransDyne catalogues the failure modes: similar-sounding drug names transcribed incorrectly, phrases such as no history of chest pain flipped into their opposite, and billing inconsistencies that survive automation and surface later as claim denials. The editing role it describes, verifying terminology, grammar and contextual meaning so that the record reflects physician intent, is the shape of the surviving Philippine job. This is a vendor's argument for its own service, so we weight it accordingly, but it matches the direction of the employment data.
