What Does POC Mean in BPO?

By BPOAI Editorial· Last updated:

In BPO, POC means one of two things. Most often it is the Point of Contact: the named person on the client side or the provider side who owns communication for an account. In sales and solutions teams it is the Proof of Concept: a short pilot that shows the provider can do the work before a full contract is signed.

How POC works day to day

As a point of contact, POC is a role attached to a relationship rather than a job title. Every account has a client POC, the person at the customer's company who answers questions, approves changes, and hears about problems first, and a provider POC, usually the account or operations manager, who is that same person in the other direction. On the floor the word gets used more loosely: a team's POC for a system outage, the POC for payroll queries, the POC on the night shift. When someone asks "who is the POC for this?" they mean who owns it.

As a proof of concept, POC is a stage in winning business. Before a client commits hundreds of seats, the provider runs a small pilot, often a handful of agents for a fixed number of weeks, against agreed service levels and quality targets. The client watches the numbers; if the pilot holds its service level and quality scores, the contract follows, sometimes with the pilot team becoming the first wave. Job ads that mention a "POC account" or "pilot LOB" are describing exactly this, and they tend to hire experienced agents because the pilot has to look good.

POC in a Philippine BPO

On a Philippine floor the two meanings live in different rooms. Agents and team leaders use POC almost exclusively for point of contact, and the client POC is a name everyone on the account knows, because a message from that person can change a schedule, a script, or a target the same day. The solutions, sales, and transition teams use it for proof of concept, and the pilot is where the Philippines wins a lot of its work: a client trialling a few seats in Manila or Cebu against an existing site elsewhere, with the pilot's service level, quality, and satisfaction numbers deciding where the next few hundred seats go. If you are on a pilot, the numbers you post are being read by someone who has not signed yet, which is why pilot teams are staffed with tenured people and watched more closely than a steady-state account. And if you looked up what POC means in BPO because a job ad used it, it almost always means point of contact.

POC: quick answers

01

Which meaning of POC does a job ad use?

Almost always point of contact: "POC for escalations" or "act as client POC" describes owning communication. "POC account" or "pilot" in the same ad points to proof of concept, and the surrounding words usually make it clear.

02

Is the POC the same as the account manager?

Often the provider-side POC is the account or operations manager, but not always. The POC is whoever is named to own communication on a topic, and on a large account there are several: one for the client relationship, one for workforce, one for IT.

03

How long does a proof of concept run?

Long enough to produce numbers the client trusts, typically a few weeks to a few months, with a fixed seat count and agreed service level and quality targets. If the pilot holds its numbers, the contract and the ramp follow.

Related terms

POC sits alongside the vocabulary you will hear in the same breath on the floor: SLA (service level agreement), KPI (key performance indicator), LOB (line of business), and SME (subject matter expert). Each entry answers in the first forty words, the same way this one does.
